HUNGER FREE WORLD
Globally, about 8.9% of the world’s population — 690 million people — go to bed on an empty stomach each night. Since 2014, the number of people affected by hunger has been slowly on the rise. If it continues at this rate, it’ll exceed 840 million by 2030. Millions of people around the world are simply too poor to be able to buy food. They also lack the resources to grow their own food, such as arable land and the means to harvest, process, and store food. There are many causes of poverty that contribute to the problem of world hunger.Persistent instability due to adverse climate events, conflict and economic slowdowns all contribute to food insecurity. But with the majority of hungry people living in developing countries, the main cause of hunger around the world is poverty. Poverty is the principal cause of global hunger.
BECOME A HELPER
Why is 0 HUNGER important?
Hunger is the leading cause of death in the world. Our planet has provided us with tremendous resources, but unequal access and inefficient handling leaves millions of people malnourished. Ending hunger and all forms of malnutrition is one of the most urgent and widespread milestones to be reached in terms of development. If we see that there is more than enough food for everyone, that ending hunger would be easy, that it would be joyful, that it would allow hundreds of millions of people to become productive partners with us, that the lives of all of us would be enhanced immeasurably.
Priniciples for Hunger Free World
- Empowerment– In the face of social suppression, focused and sustained action is required to awaken people to the possibility of self-reliance, to build confidence, and to organize communities to take charge of their own development.
- Sustainability- Solutions to ending hunger must be sustainable locally, socially, economically and environmentally.
- Decentralization- Individual and community ownership of local development is critical. Actions are most successful if decisions are made close to the people. This requires effective national and local government working in partnership with the people.
- Human Dignity- All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, including the right to food, health, work and education. We must not treat people living in conditions of hunger as beneficiaries, which can crush dignity, but rather as the key resource for ending hunger.
GLOBAL HUNGER INDEX
The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool that measures and tracks hunger globally as well as by region and by country. The GHI is calculated annually, and its results appear in a report issued in October each year.
SDG BY UN
The Sustainable Development Goals are a call for action by all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth.
